Description

With an 83x, 24-2000mm equivalent lens, the Nikon Coolpix P900 is the undisputed king of the superzooms. On paper at least, we can’t imagine a scene that this lens shouldn’t be able to handle, whether its shooting architecture or wildlife. To keep things steady, the camera has an advanced image stabilization system that offers 5 stops of shake reduction. The lens is so long that the flash has to pop up incredibly high above the barrel.

The P900 is not a small camera in any way. It weighs 899 g (nearly 2 lbs) and is nearly the same size as a midrange DSLR – and that’s with the lens retracted. The camera’s size does give you a lot to hold onto, which is a good thing when shooting at the long end of the zoom, due to both camera shake and the lens’ maximum aperture of F6.5.

The P900 has a secondary zoom controller on its left side, which reduces camera shake for both stills and videos.Next to that is a button that ‘backs up’ the lens to a wider position, so you can locate your subject and recompose. When you release the button, the lens returns to the previous zoom setting. When you’re shooting at extreme focal lengths, this feature is crucial.

As that little Wi-Fi icon indicates, the P900 also has that feature along with NFC, which Nikon has branded ‘SnapBridge’, which allows basic control over the camera as well as easy photo sharing. There’s also a built-in GPS, which makes the P900 even more appealing to the traveler

For shooting video or just over the heads of those in front of you, the P900 offers a fully articulating 3″ LCD with 921k dots. There’s also an electronic viewfinder with the same resolution and an eye sensor that automatically activates it.
